7 Most Underrated Places In Spain You Must Visit

There were more than 83 million visitors in 2019, making it the second most visited country. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the figures dropped significantly. Nonetheless, in 2022, the number of visitors has significantly rebounded from the impact of COVID-19 and continues to increase daily. With 48 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, thousands of castles, and countless beaches, this isn’t shocking.

We hear a lot about overcrowding in Barcelona and know about cities like Madrid, Marbella, and Alicante. But what about the hidden and lesser-known places in Spain? Are there still secret spots waiting to be discovered?

The answer is yes! Spain has variety of hidden towns and villages, many of which are way off the usual tourist route. If you are one of those who dislike crowded places and can go down the street without having to dodge selfie sticks and bump into strangers at every turn. And I’m sure many of you will enjoy such locations as well!

So, here are 7 “secret” places in Spain that (probably) aren’t on your bucket list yet, but should be.

1. Arcos de la Frontera (Andalucia)

Arcos de la Frontera is a stunning village perched on a rocky cliff with winding streets. It’s part of the White Towns in southern Spain and is a hidden gem with breathtaking views of the Guadalete River. The town boasts impressive sites like St. Peter’s Church and beautiful architecture like the Palacio del Mayorazgo. And of course the minature white houses that make Arcos de la Frontera one of Cadiz’s white towns great for Instagram photos. It’s perfect for a day trip from Cadiz or Seville, but staying a night or two is also an option with good lodging available.

2. Cies Islands (Galicia)

The Cies Islands are great for nature lovers looking for an eco-friendly Spanish retreat. This archipelago, with its crystal-clear Atlantic waters, verdant forests, and tranquil shores, forms a natural park free of hotels, wifi, and noise.

Take a ferry or a private boat from Vigo to discover this serene haven. While day visits provide opportunities for nature treks and beach relaxation, there is also a well-equipped campsite ideal for stargazing. Due to limited space, reservations are required in advance.

3. Murcia City (Murcia)

Murcia, a Spanish hidden treasure, with endless sunlight and beautiful Mediterranean beaches in its coastal towns. Beyond the coast, approximately 28 miles from the nearest sandy beach, the historic Murcia City has a rich history and spectacular architecture dating back to ancient times.

Murcia City, in contrast to chaotic tourist attractions, provides a more tranquil experience. This province has it all, whether you want to relax on the beach or participate in water sports. Discover fascinating history, breathtaking baroque architecture, and delicious tapas and sangria in tapas pubs. The Santa Maria Cathedral, Real Casino de Murcia, and Floridablanca Gardens are among the highlights.

4. Albarracín (Aragón)

Albarracn, a picturesque village in Aragón, is located high above the Guadalaviar River. The village is surrounded by mediaeval walls that safeguard the pink-hued stone structures that line its winding streets. Historical treasures such as the ruins of an 11th-century fortification and the Torre de Doa Blanca provide stunning views.

Albarracn feels like a step back in time, with its lovely lantern-lit streets, stone arches, coats of arms, and flower-filled balconies. In this beautiful setting, dine on Spanish cuisine in cosy restaurants and cafes.

5. Cabo de Gata Natural Park (Andalusia)

The Parque Natural Cabo de Gata in Andalusia, Spain, is a breathtaking hidden gem. It is 83,000 acres across and features rocky beaches, turquoise oceans, salt flats, quiet coves, and a desert landscape. Along the pristine coastline, you’ll find deserted beaches, quaint villages, and fantastic hiking trails for water adventures like diving, snorkeling, sailing, and kayaking in the summer.

Almeria, the nearest city, has good housing and dining options, as well as notable landmarks such as the Alcazaba Moorish fortress.

6. Lekeitio (Basque Country)

The picturesque fishing town of Lekeitio is located in Basque Country, between Bilbao and San Sebastián. It’s an idyllic spot perched above sandy beaches in the Bay of Biscay, with colourful wooden buildings and boats. The stunning Basilica de la Asuncion de Santa Maria is the main draw.

Lekeitio has more to offer than just beautiful scenery. Imagine a stunning beach, a mountain, and an island all accessible by foot! San Nicolas Island is close to the harbour and can be reached by walking across a sandbar at low tide.

7. Cadaques (Catalonia)

Cadaques, a Mediterranean coastal town, with white walls, colourful doors, and cobblestone streets. It’s known for its private bays that form private beaches, and it’s close to the French border, surrounded by mountains that merge with the sea. It was once a fishing village, but it is now an artistic hotspot, attracting notable artists like as Chagall, Garcia Lorca, Picasso, and, most notably, Salvador Dali, who spent childhood and frequented there throughout his life.

These Spanish secret treasures await our discovery. These lesser-known jewels are waiting to steal your heart, from picturesque pueblos and wildlife escapes to spectacular coastal retreats. Pack your sense of wonder, set your compass for Espaa, and let the magic to unfold as you visit these incredible locations. Adventure and good times are guaranteed!
